Top White Sox News

  • White Sox's Josh Rojas: Homers from nine-spot in win

Rojas went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Friday's 6-3 win over the Angels.

Rojas has homered in back-to-back games after he added a big insurance run to the White Sox tally in the top of the ninth inning. That brings his season total up to three on the season, a good stretch of baseball for the 31-year-old in what's been an otherwise forgettable campaign. The infielder is slashing a mere .176/.246/.261 on the season, with his .508 OPS on pace to be the worst mark of his career in a season in which he's played at least 60 games.

  • White Sox's Colson Montgomery: Stays hot with homer

Montgomery went 1-for-4 with a solo homer during Friday's 6-3 win over the Angels.

Montgomery has discovered his power stroke lately and been one of Chicago's best run-producers. The 23-year-old hammered out his fourth home run in the last five games. In fact, all of his seven home runs this season have come within the young infielder's last 10 outings, a span of time in which he's 10-for-40 (.250 batting average) with a double, those seven homers and 14 RBI.

  • White Sox's Lenyn Sosa: Extends multi-hit game streak

Sosa went 2-for-3 with a walk, solo home run and two RBI during Friday's 6-3 win over the Angels.

Sosa has been red-hot at the plate over the last handful of games, notching multiple hits for the fifth straight time. Over that stretch, the 25-year-old is 11-for-15 (.733 batting average) with three home runs and eight RBI. On the season, the young infielder is slashing .282/.308/.436 with 11 home runs and 43 RBI in 93 games.

  • White Sox's Andrew Benintendi: Goes deep in win

Benintendi went 2-for-5 with a double and a solo home run during Friday's 6-3 win over the Angels.

Benintendi started the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run, his 14th of the season. The 31-year-old is slashing .236/.305/.432 on the season, on pace to be his first season over a .700 OPS in his three seasons with the White Sox. He also has 13 doubles, two triples and 43 RBI on the season.

  • White Sox's Steven Wilson: Earns six-out save

Wilson earned the save after throwing two clean, shutout innings with three strikeouts during Friday's 6-3 win over the Angels.

Wilson was asked to get the final six outs of the game on Friday and looked extremely sharp while doing so, sending the Angels down in order two times in a row to pick up his second save of the season. After a tough July in which he allowed 16 hits and seven runs in nine innings pitched, the 30-year-old needed this kind of outing. The right-hander holds a 2.92 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 37 innings pitched as one of the more trusted options out of the White Sox bullpen.

  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Allows two runs in return

Smith settled for a no-decision after throwing 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out four, during Friday's 6-3 win over the Angels.

In his return from the injured list, Smith made it only 4.1 innings, throwing 79 pitches. His last time throwing was a 55-pitch bullpen, so the lack of length can likely be explained away by that on this occasion, but it's still been a pattern of the 25-year-old throughout the season, especially lately. He's currently in the midst of a six-start streak of not making it through five innings. The right-hander has a 3-7 record with a 4.25 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 91 innings, and he is slated to face the Mariners on the road his next time out.

  • White Sox's Corey Julks: Selected from Charlotte

The White Sox selected Julks' contract from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.

Julks missed out on an MLB roster spot out of spring training, but he'll now earn one after slashing .295/.373/.470 with 10 homers, 46 RBI, 58 runs scored and 13 steals through 87 games in Triple-A. The 29-year-old will replace Will Robertson on the active roster and may form a platoon in right field with the lefty-hitting Mike Tauchman.

  • White Sox's Will Robertson: Sent back to Triple-A

The White Sox optioned Robertson to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.

It will be a short stint in the majors for Robertson, who was recalled by the White Sox on Wednesday. He has appeared in eight games for Charlotte since being traded by the Blue Jays in early July and has gone 11-for-34 (.324) with four doubles, one triple, three home runs and six RBI. The move makes room on the White Sox's 26-man roster for Corey Julks.

  • White Sox's Shane Smith: Activated ahead of start

The White Sox reinstated Smith (ankle) from the injured list to start Friday's game against the Angels.

After spraining his ankle during the All-Star break, Smith will return from the injured list to make his first start of the second half versus the Angels, who have turned in a .738 OPS since the beginning of July. The 25-year-old righty reached 55 pitches during a bullpen session last weekend, so the White Sox may limit the number of pitches he throws during his first start back.

  • White Sox's Chase Meidroth: Absent from Friday's lineup

Meidroth (thumb) is not in the White Sox's starting lineup against the Angels on Friday.

Meidroth suffered a right thumb injury after being hit by a pitch during Wednesday's game against the Phillies. He'll begin Friday's game on the bench while Colson Montgomery starts at shortstop and bats seventh.

  • White Sox's Jesse Scholtens: Restarts rehab assignment

Scholtens (elbow) resumed his rehab assignment July 13 and has allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out 11 over 8.1 innings in three outings with Triple-A Charlotte.

Scholtens, who is working his way back from March 2024 Tommy John surgery, began a rehab assignment May 6 before experiencing elbow discomfort June 4. After taking about a month off, the righty is now building back up again. He tossed 3.1 innings and 64 pitches in his latest start for Charlotte this past Saturday, so he'll likely require at least one or two more rehab outings before he'll be ready for activation. The White Sox wouldn't appear to have a starting role available for Scholtens, so he could work out of the bullpen or out of the rotation at Triple-A once he's reinstated from the 60-day injured list.

  • White Sox's Javier Mogollon: Shelved at Single-A

Single-A Kannapolis placed Mogollon on its 7-day injured list July 2 due to an unspecified injury.

The 19-year-old middle infielder had slashed .220/.347/.387 with five home runs and 15 stolen bases over 224 plate appearances for Kannapolis prior to landing on the shelf.

  • White Sox's Tim Elko: Kicks off rehab assignment

Elko (knee) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday and has gone 3-for-8 with two home runs, one walk, four RBI and three runs through his first two games.

The White Sox placed Elko on the 10-day injured list July 11 due to a right knee sprain, but he looks to be on the cusp of a return. Aside from moving short-side platoon outfielder Austin Slater, the White Sox didn't deal away any position players at the trade deadline, so Elko may not be in store for an everyday role at first base or designated hitter once he's activated.

  • White Sox's Duncan Davitt: Shipped to Chicago

The White Sox acquired Davitt, infielder Curtis Mead and right-hander Ben Peoples from the Rays on Thursday in exchange for right-hander Adrian Houser, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Davitt, 25, excelled at Double-A Montgomery (3.55 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) to start the season but he has struggled since getting to Triple-A Durham, logging a 6.30 ERA and 1.55 WHIP despite a tidy 24:6 K:BB in 20 innings. It's unclear how long the White Sox will keep developing him as a starter.

  • White Sox's Ben Peoples: Dealt to White Sox

The White Sox acquired Peoples, infielder Curtis Mead and right-hander Duncan Davitt from the Rays on Thursday in exchange for right-hander Adrian Houser, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Peoples, 24, converted from the rotation to the bullpen this season in the Rays system. He had a 2.65 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 39:20 K:BB in 37.1 innings over 35 appearances at Triple-A Durham.

  • White Sox's Curtis Mead: Shipped to South Siders

The White Sox acquired Mead and right-handers Duncan Davitt and Ben Peoples from the Rays on Thursday in exchange for right-hander Adrian Houser, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.

The Rays optioned Mead to Triple-A Durham shortly before the All-Star break, but he should quickly earn a look in the big leagues while he moves over to a last-place White Sox squad that's lacking in infielder talent. The 24-year-old is capable of playing first base, third base and second base and slashed .226/.318/.339 with three home runs and four steals over 132 plate appearances for Tampa Bay prior to his demotion.

  • White Sox's Ryan Noda: Activated, optioned to Triple-A

The White Sox reinstated Noda (quadriceps) from the injured list Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Charlotte.

Noda had been on the shelf since July 7 with a right quad strain, though he had been on a rehab assignment with Charlotte for the past week. During his assignment, the 29-year-old went 2-for-19 with a home run, two RBI, four runs scored and eight strikeouts. He'll stay put in Triple-A now that he's fully healthy, and the White Sox will move forward with Miguel Vargas as their main first baseman.

... See More ... See Less
  • White Sox's Colson Montgomery: Goes deep again

Montgomery went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Wednesday against the Phillies.

Montgomery popped his home run in the fourth inning, his fifth long ball in his last eight starts. He's also struck out one time or fewer in each of those games, good for a 15.6 percent strikeout rate. The ability to make consistent contact was a major question for Montgomery upon his promotion, but he's handled big-league pitching well in his limited sample.
