Kimani Vidal: Back to practice squad
The Chargers signed Vidal to the practice squad Wednesday.
Vidal couldn't earn a spot on Los Angeles' initial 53-man roster entering Year 2, but the 2024 sixth-round pick will stick around in an emergency reserve role on the practice squad. Across 10 regular-season appearances as a rookie in 2024, Vidal rushed just 43 times for 155 yards (3.6 YPC) and zero touchdowns. He also secured five of nine targets for 62 yards and one score.

Kimani Vidal: Waived by Bolts
The Chargers waived Vidal on Tuesday.
The 2024 sixth-rounder entered training camp in the mix for a depth role behind Najee Harris (eye) and rookie Omarion Hampton. Vidal wasn't the most efficient runner across three preseason games, finishing with 25 carries for 69 yards (2.8 YPC) and two touchdowns. With Harris expected to be activated off the NFI list and Hampton slated to see a meaningful workload out of the backfield, Vidal ultimately lost out to Hassan Haskins for the third and final RB roster spot on the Chargers' 53-man roster. Vidal turns 24 years old Thursday and has just one NFL season under his belt, so he should garner interest on the waiver wire from teams looking to add depth at running back.

Chargers' Kimani Vidal: Struggles on six carries
Vidal rushed six times for 16 yards while failing to bring in his lone target in Sunday's 27-13 preseason win over the Saints.
Vidal got the first crack at touches out of the backfield Sunday with Najee Harris (eye) still sidelined and Omarion Hampton getting rested for the exhibition. The 22-year-old Vidal struggled in the spot start, averaging well under 3.0 yards per carry and wasting a prime opportunity to solidify a roster spot. Vidal will have to show improved play to close out the preseason schedule or risk missing the cut completely when rosters are finalized.

Chargers' Kimani Vidal: In mix for depth role
As training camp approaches, Vidal is looking to secure a role behind newcomers Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton, Spencer Schultz of USA Today reports.
During his rookie campaign, Vidal recorded 43 carries for 155 yards and added five catches for 62 yards and a TD across 10 regular season games while working in a backfield that also included J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards. Ahead of Week 1, Vidal figures to compete with Hassan Haskins for depth slotting behind Harris and Hampton, with Schultz noting that Vidal's case for a roster spot/role in 2025 could hinge on him demonstrating that he can be a factor in the Chargers' passing game.

Chargers' Kimani Vidal: Hardly utilized in rookie campaign
Vidal finished his rookie campaign with 43 carries for 155 yards and an additional five receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown across 10 games.
The 2024 sixth-round pick was considered a possible deep sleeper entering the year given the uncertain availability of oft-injured backs J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards, but the imported Ravens duo were relatively healthy throughout the year, relegating Vidal to a healthy inactive at portions of the season. Even when the rookie had opportunities to flourish due to various injuries to the aforementioned duo, Vidal only saw six or more carries twice throughout the season and played just over 21 offensive snaps twice throughout the entire campaign. The Chargers clearly prioritize multiple rotational backs and depth given the offensive emphasis of the position, but it's unclear if Vidal will be a part of the team's larger goals despite Dobbins entering the offseason as an unrestricted free agent and Edwards due a $3 million bonus entering his age-30 season.

Chargers' Kimani Vidal: Healthy inactive Saturday
Vidal is inactive for Saturday's wild-card matchup against the Texans.
With J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards both healthy for the postseason contest, Vidal will revert back to his status as a healthy inactive like he did Weeks 10-12. Hassan Haskins will operate as the team's third back given his utility as a special teams player.

Chargers' Kimani Vidal: Gets just one snap in Week 18
Vidal went without a carry or target while playing one of the Chargers' 75 snaps on offense in Sunday's 34-20 win over the Raiders.
Though the Chargers were without Gus Edwards (ankle) for a second consecutive game, starting running back J.K. Dobbins (65 percent snap share) took on more playing time in his second game back from injured reserve, while Hassan Haskins (36 percent share) settled in as the clear No. 2 back. That left little work left over for Vidal, who finished the regular season with 43 carries for 155 yards and no touchdowns to go with five catches for 62 yards and a score on nine targets over his 10 appearances. If Edwards is available for Saturday's wild-card game in Houston, Vidal could find himself on the inactive list for the first time since Week 12.
