NFL Preseason: Can Josh Simmons Replicate Success of 1st Preseason Game?

Player Outlook
Is Brown worth taking with a late-round pick? He could be, even if it's just for the six games Rashee Rice misses to start the year. Brown's 2024 season was capsized by an August shoulder injury that kept him out of action until Week 16. He's healthy, but if Fantasy managers were to buy into him again, they'd have to overlook his reputation as a receiver who might flash for a few weeks and then fizzle out. Last year he only fizzled, accumulating 9.5 PPR points or less in each of the five games he played despite averaging 5.6 targets per game. Brown is at best a late-round flier who is a risky bet to completely replace Rice's production through mid-October.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Good to go for Week 1

Kansas City head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday that Brown (ankle) has been a full practice participant this week and will be available for Friday's season opener versus the Chargers in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports. Brown didn't play in any preseason contests after tweaking his right ankle early in training camp, but he's been able to practice for about two weeks and said that he's feeling "really good" heading into Friday's contest, per Matt McMullen of the team's official site. With Rashee Rice (suspension) set to miss the first six contests of the season, a healthy Brown could see added involvement in the passing game early on. After requiring shoulder surgery last September, the veteran was limited to just two regular-season and three postseason contests in 2024 and struggled to forge a connection with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, reeling in just 14 of 28 targets for 141 yards and no touchdowns over 159 total snaps.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Practicing Sunday

Brown (ankle) is participating in practice Sunday, and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said the wideout "should be fine" for Week 1 despite not playing at all during the exhibition slate, Charles Goldman of AtoZSports.com reports. Brown continues to be on track to play in Friday's team regular-season opener against the Chargers in Brazil. Of the receiver's lack of participation in preseason games, Reid stated, "He's a veteran guy. If he was younger, I'd be more worried about it, but he's a veteran guy that kind of knows how to go about it. He should be fine. And we've got guys who can kind of rotate in, too." Brown's ability to suit up Week 1 is especially important to Kansas City with Rashee Rice suspended for the first six games of the campaign and Jalen Royals (knee) not expected to play against the Chargers.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Back at practice

Brown (ankle/foot) has resumed practicing, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. Per Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com, Brown did a little work Sunday and will do a bit more Monday, which suggests that the wideout is being eased back in after missing time. In terms of the chances of Brown seeing any action in Friday's preseason finale, Nate Taylor of ESPN.com notes that coach Andy Reid said, "We'll see how he progresses through this thing. It's not a matter of want. He wants to do it. He's taking it slow and we don't want any setbacks."

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Won't play Friday

Brown (ankle/foot) won't play in Friday's preseason contest against the Seahawks, Nate Taylor of ESPN.com reports. Brown remained sidelined during Wednesday's practice, per Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site, and the wideout is now slated to sit out his second straight exhibition contest Friday. Brown's last chance to see preseason snaps will arrive Aug. 22 against the Bears.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Not practicing yet

Brown (ankle/foot) appears slated to sit out Tuesday's practice, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports. Kansas City coach Andy Reid talked up Brown's progress Monday, saying that the veteran wideout has resumed running, but he's still not yet ready to log his first on-field action at practice since July 29. Brown's ankle/foot injury kept him from suiting up for Saturday's preseason contest against the Cardinals, and he still looks uncertain for Friday's exhibition matchup on the road in Seattle.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Making progress toward return

Coach Andy Reid noted Monday that Brown (ankle/foot) is making "great progress" and has resumed running, Nate Taylor of ESPN.com reports. Per Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com, Reid indicated that Brown is not dealing with a high-ankle sprain, but even with the wideout's ankle/foot issue improving, there's still not a timetable for his return to action. Brown thus remains iffy for Friday's preseason contest against the Seahawks.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Still not practicing

Brown (ankle) remained sidelined at practice Thursday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. Given that Brown hasn't practiced since making an early exit from last Tuesday's session, it seems safe to assume that he'll sit out Saturday's preseason opener against the Cardinals. The same applies to fellow WR Rashee Rice, who has missed the Chiefs' last two practices due to a groin injury.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Misses Wednesday's practice

Brown (ankle) didn't practice Wednesday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. Brown and Xavier Worthy (concussion) were among a handful players who left Tuesday's practice early, but McMullen indicated afterward that most (if not all) of their injuries don't appear to be long-term concerns. For now, Brown's status can continue to be viewed as day-to-day.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Tweaks ankle Tuesday

Coach Andy Reid noted after Tuesday's practice that he believes Brown will be fine after suffering an ankle injury during the session, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. That said, Rapoport added that Brown figures to undergo testing to confirm the notion that his ankle issue isn't anything major, but for now we'll continue to view the wideout as day-to-day. The same applies to fellow WR Xavier Worthy, who banged his head prior to exiting Tuesday's practice.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Injures ankle Tuesday

Brown suffered an ankle injury during Tuesday's practice, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. After appearing to sustain a right lower leg injury during Tuesday's session, Brown headed back to the Chiefs' team facility in the front seat of a cart, with coach Andy Reid clarifying afterward that the wideout is dealing with an ankle issue, per Nate Taylor of ESPN.com. For now, consider Brown day-to-day as the team's Aug. 9 preseason opener against the Cardinals approaches.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Exits Tuesday's practice

Brown appeared to sustain a right lower-leg injury during Tuesday's practice, Nate Taylor of ESPN.com reports. Per Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com, Brown subsequently headed back to Kansas City's team facility in the front seat of a cart to be evaluated. Consider the wideout day-to-day until an update on his status is provided.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Targeted five times in AFCCG win

Brown had three receptions on five targets for 35 yards in Sunday's 32-29 AFC Championship Game win over the Bills. Brown's five targets were second among Kansas City receivers after he finished with zero receptions on two targets against the Texans in the divisional round. The veteran wideout could have had a bigger fantasy score if he was able to secure a deep sideline pass from Patrick Mahomes in the second half that hit him in the hands. Brown joins teammates DeAndre Hopkins and JuJu Smith-Schuster as a group of veteran WRs who could either pop off or produce next to nothing when the Chiefs face the Eagles on Feb. 9 in Super Bowl LIX.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Finishes with 46 yards Wednesday

Brown recorded four receptions for 46 yards on seven targets in Wednesday's 29-10 win over Pittsburgh. Brown finished third in both targets and receptions for Kansas City, but he failed to bring in any of Patrick Mahomes' trio of touchdown passes in the win. The 27-year-old Brown has produced nine receptions for 91 yards in two games with the Chiefs this season. Though the Chiefs have clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs and have little at stake in the Week 18 regular-season finale versus the Broncos, Brown could still play in that contest to get some more reps under his belt in advance of the postseason after missing the first 14 games of the campaign due to a dislocated shoulder.

  • Chiefs' Marquise Brown: Week 17 Waiver Priority List

Brown made his 2024 and Chiefs debut in Week 16 against Houston after being out all season with a shoulder injury, and he immediately got eight targets. It will be tough to trust him as a must-start option in Week 17 at Pittsburgh, but clearly, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid feel like Brown is ready to be an immediate contributor. He's worth using as a No. 3 Fantasy receiver in a desperate situation in Week 17.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Five catches in season debut

Brown caught five of eight targets for 45 yards in Saturday's 27-19 win over the Texans. Brown made his long-awaited regular-season Chiefs debut, which was put on hold by a shoulder injury suffered in the preseason. His first contribution was a notable one, as Brown's 12-yard catch on fourth-and-1 extended Kansas City's opening drive, which eventually ended in a Patrick Mahomes rushing touchdown. The speedy wideout wound up leading the team in first-half receiving yards with 38 but tacked on just seven yards after halftime. Brown will look to keep building chemistry with Mahomes against the Steelers on Wednesday.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Officially activated from IR

Brown (shoulder) has been activated from IR ahead of Saturday's game against the Texans. Brown, who practiced fully Tuesday through Thursday, doesn't carry an injury designation for the contest, which sets the stage for the speedy pass catcher to see his first game action since suffering a sternoclavicular injury on the first play of the Chiefs' first preseason game back on Aug. 10, per Adam Teicher of ESPN.com. In his looming return to a wide receiver corps that also includes Xavier Worthy and DeAndre Hopkins, it remains to be seen what sort of volume Brown will see Week 16, but on the plus side given the nature of the upper-body injury that caused his lengthy layoff, Brown was "able to run and keep himself in running shape," head coach Andy Reid noted Thursday.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Trending toward debut

Brown (shoulder) is expected to be activated off injured reserve ahead of Saturday's game against the Texans, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. The Chiefs will need to officially activate Brown off IR ahead of the contest, but it appears like the speedy wideout is on a direct path to making his season debut in Week 16. It's unclear to what degree Brown will be utilized in his first game action since Week 15 of the 2023 campaign, but the team will gladly welcome the 27-year-old's field-stretching speed to an offense that has struggled to produce explosive plays this season.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Practices fully Tuesday

Kansas City listed Brown (shoulder) as a full participant in Tuesday's practice. Brown has missed the first 14 games of the season while recovering from mid-September surgery on his left shoulder, but he looks to be closing in on his 2024 debut. He took a step forward Tuesday by taking every rep in practice, after he had been listed as a limited participant in his return to practice last Friday. Earlier Tuesday, head coach Andy Reid confirmed to Adam Teicher of ESPN.com that Brown will have a chance to play this Saturday against the Texans, but Kansas City will likely wait until the end of the week before deciding whether to activate the wideout from IR. If he's available this weekend, Brown could be eased into the mix with a light snap count, but he'll offer the defending champs a downfield threat that the team has been sorely lacking this season.

  • Chiefs' Marquise Brown: Week 16 Waiver Priority List

There's a chance Brown could return in Week 16 against Houston after being out all season with a shoulder injury, and hopefully Patrick Mahomes (ankle) is healthy. Keep an eye on what happens with the Chiefs in practice this week, and Brown could be a late addition off the waiver wire if Mahomes and Brown are both cleared to play against the Texans.

  • Chiefs' Hollywood Brown: Practice window opening

The Chiefs are opening Brown's (shoulder) practice window Friday, Albert Breer of SI.com reports. A previous report suggested it would happen either Friday or Monday, after Chiefs coach Andy Reid confirmed earlier this week that Brown was almost ready to practice. Brown won't play against Cleveland this Sunday and might be viewed as a long shot for Week 16, but it seems he'll return before the end of the regular season unless he suffers a setback in practice. There's now a 21-day window in which Brown can practice without being activated to the 53-man roster.
