Justin Tucker is going to have some competition after the Ravens made the decision to use the 186th overall pick on Arizona kicker Tyler Loop, marking the first time in franchise history that the Ravens have drafted a kicker.

Tucker has been with the Ravens since 2012 and he's been the best kicker in the NFL for most of that span but he's been plagued by controversy over the past few months. Tucker is facing allegations of sexual misconduct after being accused by 16 massage therapists of acting inappropriately. The NFL is currently investigating the situation and the Ravens had said that they won't be making a decision on Tucker's future until the investigation is complete

Not only is Tucker facing legal trouble but he's also coming off the worst season of his career. The five-time All-Pro hit just 73.3% of his field goals in 2024, marking the first time in his career that he finished below 85%.

Between his legal troubles and his on-field struggles, the Ravens didn't try to hide the fact that they might draft a kicker this year.

"It's worth it if you have the right kicker," Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said back on April 15. "It just depends on the [draft] board. It depends on the player. It depends who's there. It depends on how your coaches see him."

If Loop is going to win the starting job in Baltimore, he's going to have to improve his accuracy, especially from from long range. During his final season at Arizona in 2024, he hit just 78.3% of his field goals. The numbers were even worse from long range as he hit just 61.5% of his field goals from 50 yards and longer, over the past two seasons but he did drill a 62-yard field goal for the Wildcats last season.

Taking Loop was somewhat of a surprise, if only because he wasn't viewed as one of the top kickers in the draft. Miami's Andres Borregales and Florida State's Ryan Fitzgerald were generally viewed as the top two kickers available. Borregales was off the board at 186 but Fitzgerald was still available.

The Ravens have had a strong track record with kickers. Matt Stover was the team's first kicker in 1996 and he held the job until 2008. Tucker was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012 and he's been the kicker for the past 13 seasons. That means the Ravens have used just two kickers for 26 of their 29 seasons.
