  • Pirates' Alexander Canario: Filling in for Cruz versus lefty

Canario will start in center field and bat sixth in Monday's game against the Brewers. With southpaw Jose Quintana taking the hill for Milwaukee, the right-handed-hitting Canario will get the nod over the left-handed-hitting Oneil Cruz in center field. Given that Cruz is slashing just .110/.219/.190 over 114 plate appearances versus left-handed pitching for the season, Canario could end up settling in as his regular platoon partner.

  • Pirates' Alexander Canario: Knocks in two

Canario went 1-for-3 with two RBI against the Tigers on Tuesday. Canario has lost playing time recently but should be in line for a short-term uptick with Bryan Reynolds expected to be placed on the paternity list. Canario entered the game in the second inning after Reynolds was pulled to be with his family, and Canario delivered a two-RBI single one frame later. After hitting relatively well early in his time with Pittsburgh, Canario has gone just 2-for-20 with a 40.9 percent strikeout rate in June.

  • Pirates' Alexander Canario: Loses hold of regular role

Canario is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins. Canario will be on the bench for the third game in a row, with all of his absences from the lineup coming against right-handed pitchers. Though Canario appeared to usurp Tommy Pham as the Pirates' preferred option in left field in early May, both players now look to be behind the hot-hitting Adam Frazier on the depth chart. Frazier is a left-handed hitter, so Canario or Pham will likely spell him in left field when the Pirates face southpaws.

  • Pirates' Alexander Canario: Out of lineup again Thursday

Canario is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest versus the Astros. Tommy Pham could be re-taking the left-field job from Canario, as this will be Pham's second straight start there and fourth start in the last six games. Canario has a .546 OPS and 40 percent strikeout rate over his last 10 tilts.

  • Pirates' Alexander Canario: Sitting amid struggles

Canario is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros. Canario has struck out at a 40 percent clip and has produced a .546 OPS over his last 10 games, and his poor contact rate is beginning to cost him some playing time. He'll hit the bench for the third time in five games while Tommy Pham gets the nod in left field Wednesday.

  • Pirates' Alexander Canario: Absent from Friday's lineup

Canario is not in the Pirates' starting lineup against the Padres on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Canario will open the weekend series on the bench while Tommy Pham, Oneil Cruz and Bryan Reynolds man the outfield for the Pirates. Canario has reached base safely in each of his last six games and has gone 9-for-26 (.346) with two steals, four runs scored and one RBI over that span.

  • Pirates' Alexander Canario: Swipes bag Tuesday

Canario went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored in Tuesday's 9-6 win over the Diamondbacks. Canario has three straight multi-hit efforts and has hit safely in his last five games. In that longer span, he's gone 9-for-22 (.409), though he also has a 1:9 BB:K during that stretch. The outfielder is at a .250/.304/.385 slash line with two steals, three home runs, seven RBI and 12 runs scored over 112 plate appearances this season. He has played regularly since May 9, typically occupying a spot in the middle of the lineup while seeing time at all three outfield positions.

  • Pirates' Alexander Canario: Out of Pittsburgh lineup

Canario is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Brewers. Canario had started the previous four contests and 11 of the last 12 tilts, but he'll get a breather in Thursday's series opener. Tommy Pham is handling left field and batting eighth for the Pirates.

  • Pirates' Alexander Canario: Moving into regular role

Canario will start in right field and bat fifth in Wednesday's game against the Reds. With Andrew McCutchen getting a breather for the afternoon game and with Bryan Reynolds occupying the designated-hitter spot, the Pirates will have room at the corner-outfield spots for both Canario and Tommy Pham. However, the Pirates are seemingly prioritizing Canario ahead of Pham when McCutchen is in the lineup, as Canario will pick up his seventh start in the Bucs' last eight games, while Pham is getting just his third start during that stretch. Canario owns a modest .654 OPS on the season, but that still represents a big upgrade over the .481 OPS that Pham has provided.

  • Pirates' Alexander Canario: Three straight starts

Canario went 1-for-2 with a walk and a double Sunday against Atlanta. Canario has slowly taken over as Pittsburgh's starting left fielder since the start of May, but the team appears to be committed to giving him a consistent shot in three games since Don Kelly took over as manager. He has started each of those matchups while hitting in the bottom third of the order. Canario provides some needed pop to the Pittsburgh lineup, and he has three extra-base hits in that three-game span.

  • Pirates' Alexander Canario: Smacks first homer

Canario went 1-for-2 with a solo home run, two walks and a second run scored in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Reds. Canario was responsible for Pittsburgh's lone run off Andrew Abbott -- he led off the fifth inning with a 402-blast off the left-hander to center field, cutting the Pirates' deficit to 4-1. The home run was just Canario's second hit in seven games this year. The 24-year-old outfielder has displayed impressive power in the minor leagues, hitting 37 home runs across three levels in 2022, but he has yet to get an extended run in the majors.

  • Pirates' Alexander Canario: Joins roster

The Pirates added Canario to their 26-man roster Thursday. The Mets traded Canario to the Pirates for cash considerations Monday, but he had yet to be officially added to the roster. To make room on the roster, the Pirates optioned Ji Hwan Bae to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.

  • Cubs' Alexander Canario: Removed from 40-man roster

The Cubs designated Canario for assignment Thursday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for Justin Turner, whose signing has been made official. Canario has an .857 OPS but a 42.2 percent strikeout rate during his brief time in the majors over the last two seasons. Strikeout issues and a lack of minor-league options could limit Canario's appeal, but the Cubs should be able to find a trade partner willing to gamble on the 24-year-old's power upside.

  • Cubs' Alexander Canario: Out of options

Canario has a good chance at making Chicago's Opening Day roster in a bench role, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. After appearing in six games for the Cubs as a rookie in 2023, Canario saw 15 games of action last year. He's still just 24 years old and hit for significant power at Triple-A last year (.514 SLG, .271 ISO), but the main reason he's a favorite to make the club is that he's out of minor-league options. Given that Canario has a 42.2 percent strikeout rate and 4.4 percent walk rate in the majors and struck out at a 30.4 percent clip in the minors last year, he'd likely be limited to work against southpaws if he makes the club.

  • Cubs' Alexander Canario: Out with hamstring strain

Triple-A Iowa placed Canario on its 7-day injured list Friday with a right hamstring strain, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Iowa deactivated Canario just over a week after he was carted off the field with the injury July 24 against Indianapolis. The 24-year-old outfielder is without a clear timeline to return to action. Canario retains a spot on the Cubs' 40-man roster but had been with Iowa since July 19 following a brief stint with the big club. He maintains a .243/.336/.514 slash line over 283 plate appearances at the Triple-A level for the season.

  • Cubs' Alexander Canario: Joins big-league club

The Cubs recalled Canario from Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The 24-year-old was up with the Cubs early in the season and posted an .815 OPS in 25 plate appearances, and he'll receive another look as Cody Bellinger heads to the injured list with a fractured finger. Canario could have at least a semi-regular role with Bellinger and Mike Tauchman (groin) both sidelined.

  • Cubs' Alexander Canario: Set for first start of 2024

Canario is starting in right field and batting ninth Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks. Canario was called up from Triple-A Iowa on Monday, and he'll now draw his first major-league start of the 2024 campaign. The 23-year-old produced a .269/.377/.481 slash line with seven extra-base hits, including two homers, over 52 at-bats with Iowa so far this season. With Seiya Suzuki (oblique) expected to miss at least four weeks, Canario will look to carve out a consistent role with the big-league club for the time being.

  • Cubs' Alexander Canario: Belts slam for first MLB homer

Canario went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and five RBI in Tuesday's 14-1 win of the Pirates. Making his first big-league start and batting ninth as the DH, the 23-year-old helped put the finishing touches on the rout by slugging his first career homer in the eighth inning -- a grand slam off Kyle Nicolas. Canario has flashed big-time power in the minors, launching eight homers in 36 games for Triple-A Iowa this season after mashing 30 over 101 games in the high minors the year before, but he still needs to prove he can make consistent enough contact against major-league pitching to become a significant part of the Cubs' future.

  • Cubs' Alexander Canario: Gets first big-league start

Canario will serve as the designated hitter and bat ninth Tuesday versus the Pirates. Canario has spent most of September on the Cubs' active major-league roster, but this will be his first appearance in the starting lineup. The 23-year-old put up an .866 OPS with eight homers, 35 RBI, two steals and 23 runs scored in 36 games for Triple-A Iowa prior to arriving in Chicago.

  • Cubs' Alexander Canario: Optioned to Triple-A

Canario (ankle, shoulder) was optioned to Triple-A Iowa by the Cubs on Friday. Canario is still recovering from a fractured left ankle and dislocated left shoulder he suffered while playing in the Dominican Winter League back in October. The 22-year-old is close to being cleared for baseball activities but could get a late start to the season for Iowa.
