  • Nationals' Paul DeJong: Likely to miss two-plus months

DeJong isn't expected to return from the 10-day injured list for at least two months after undergoing surgery Monday to repair his nose and sinuses, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. He also had a titanium orbital plate inserted as part of the procedure. DeJong was injured when he was struck on the left side of his face by a 92.7 mile-per-hour fastball in an April 15 game against the Pirates. In addition to breaking his nose, DeJong sustained a huge gash to his cheek and dealt with considerable bleeding in his left eye, resulting in him being rushed to the hospital before he was released the next day. Because he was still dealing with significant swelling near his eye more than week after the incident, DeJong waited until Monday to have his surgery, which was more extensive than anticipated. The Nationals haven't offered up a clear timeline for DeJong to return to action, but the 31-year-old infielder said he expects to resume working out in about a month with the hope of being ready to play in games at some point shortly before the All-Star break. A more precise target date for his return could be established once he's further removed from the surgery.

  • Nationals' Paul DeJong: Scheduled for surgery Monday

DeJong will undergo surgery Monday to repair his sinuses and orbital plate, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. DeJong's nose was fractured when he was hit by a Mitch Keller pitch April 15. DeJong was placed on the 10-day injured list the next day, and after visiting a specialist it was determined that surgery was the best way forward for his recovery. He will go under the knife Monday and is expected to return to action this year, though a timeline for his return has not been established.

  • Nationals' Paul DeJong: Released from hospital

DeJong (nose) was held overnight at a Pittsburgh hospital for observation but was released Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. DeJong was hit in the face by a pitch in Tuesday's game versus the Pirates and was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a fractured nose. The Nationals are hopeful DeJong isn't dealing with any additional injuries, but they won't know for sure until the swelling around his eye goes down. Amed Rosario is at third base for Washington on Wednesday and should see the bulk of the time there while DeJong is out.

  • Nationals' Paul DeJong: Goes on IL with fractured nose

The Nationals placed DeJong on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a fractured nose, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports. DeJong suffered the injury in Tuesday's 3-0 win over the Pirates, when he was hit in the face by a Mitch Keller offering. If the fractured nose is the extent of his injuries, DeJong shouldn't be in line for an extended absence. Trey Lipscomb was recalled from Triple-A Rochester and will take over DeJong's spot on the 26-man active roster.

  • Nationals' Paul DeJong: Expected to go on injured list

The Nationals are likely to place DeJong (face) on the 10-day injured list, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. DeJong was hit in the face by a pitch in the sixth inning of Tuesday's game versus the Pirates. There's no word yet on the specifics of his injuries, but he will need some down time. Trey Lipscomb is slated to take his roster spot and Amed Rosario is likely to see the bulk of the starts at third base while DeJong is out.

  • Nationals' Paul DeJong: Exits after being hit in face

DeJong exited Tuesday's contest against the Pirates in the top of the sixth inning after being hit in the face by a pitch, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. DeJong was struck in the left side of his face by a 92.7 mph fastball from Mitch Keller, suffering a cut beneath his eye. The 31-year-old was subsequently removed from the game, and Amed Rosario replaced him in the contest. More information will likely be provided on DeJong's status in the near future.

  • Nationals' Paul DeJong: Getting breather Friday

DeJong is not in the lineup for Friday's contest against the Diamondbacks. It's been a struggle for DeJong in the early going this season, as he's just 4-for-18 with 11 strikeouts. He'll get a day off to regroup while Jose Tena plays third base and bats eighth.

  • Nationals' Paul DeJong: Three hits in Sunday's win

DeJong went 3-for-3 with two doubles in Sunday's win over the Phillies. After an 0-for-6 start to his Nationals tenure with five strikeouts, DeJong broke out with two-baggers off Aaron Nola and Jose Ruiz. The veteran infielder is just a placeholder at third base for Washington, but he slugged 24 homers in 139 games last year between the White Sox and Royals and he could provide some thump from the bottom half of the order. DeJong isn't likely to do much more than that, however -- he's posted a strikeout rate north of 30 percent in each of the last three seasons, leading to a .205/.263/.372 slash line in 1,119 plate appearances.

  • Nationals' Paul DeJong: Smacks first homer of spring

DeJong went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. The veteran infielder got hold of a Josh Hader offering in the third inning, giving DeJong his first long ball of the spring. Although he didn't sign with the Nationals until mid-February, DeJong is the favorite to be the team's Opening Day third baseman after slugging 24 homers in 139 games last season split between the White Sox and Royals, albeit with a mediocre .227/.276/.427 slash line. Prospect Brady House is having a strong start to camp however, and DeJong could simply be keeping the hot corner warm for the 21-year-old.

  • Nationals' Paul DeJong: Lands in Washington

DeJong agreed to a one-year, $1 million contract with the Nationals on Sunday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Jose Tena and Trey Lipscomb were set to compete for the starting role at third base during spring training for the Nationals, but DeJong may now be the favorite for the job. The 31-year-old played in 139 regular-season games with the White Sox and Royals last season and provided his typical low-contact, high-power production with 24 homers, a .227 average and a 32.4 percent strikeout rate.

  • Royals' Paul DeJong: Losing out on playing time

DeJong is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Tigers. DeJong looks to have lost hold of a regular spot in the Kansas City infield, as he'll hit the bench against a right-handed starting pitcher (Reese Olson) for the fourth time in the last five games. Adam Frazier will enter the lineup at third base in place of DeJong, who is getting on base at a .154 clip with a 30.8 percent strikeout rate since the start of September.

  • Royals' Paul DeJong: Sitting down Saturday

DeJong isn't in the Royals' lineup Saturday versus Pittsburgh. DeJong will sit for the second consecutive game after going 3-for-21 with an RBI and eight strikeouts to begin the month of September. Maikel Garcia will step in as Kansas City's third baseman and bat eighth.

  • Royals' Paul DeJong: Idle Friday

DeJong is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Pittsburgh. DeJong is out of the lineup for the third time in four games, with Adam Frazier slotting in at third base Friday. Since being dealt to Kansas City, DeJong has slashed .239/.294/.467 across 30 games. However, he's gone just 3-for-19 in September.

  • Royals' Paul DeJong: Sitting amid slump

DeJong is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees. DeJong will hit the bench for the second time in three games while he's gotten off to a 3-for-19 start to September. Since joining the Royals ahead of the trade deadline, DeJong has put together a respectable .244/.300/.478 slash line, so the team likely isn't ready to pull the plug on him just yet as a near-everyday player.

  • Royals' Paul DeJong: Absent from lineup

DeJong is not in the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Yankees. DeJong has gone 3-for-26 with one home run and 13 strikeouts over his last eight games, so he'll begin Monday's game on the bench while he's slumping at the plate. Maikel Garcia will check in for DeJong at third base and will bat seventh.

  • Royals' Paul DeJong: Sitting Friday

DeJong is not in Friday's lineup against the Twins. DeJong has seemingly taken over the primary third base duties of late, with Maikel Garcia often manning second base and Michael Massey seeing time at designated hitter. In Friday's lineup, however, DeJong is the odd man out against righty Zebby Matthews.

  • Royals' Paul DeJong: Not in Sunday's lineup

DeJong is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. DeJong started the past six games and will receive a breather after going 5-for-21 with three homers and 12 strikeouts during that span. Maikel Garcia will step in at the hot corner in the series finale at Houston.

  • Royals' Paul DeJong: Homers in Friday's loss

DeJong went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Astros. DeJong's game-tying homer off Josh Hader in the top of the ninth inning was just the second hit of the game for the Royals. Over his last 13 games, DeJong has gone 14-for-45 (.311) with five homers, three doubles, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored, though he's struck out 19 times in that span. For the year, DeJong is at a .238/.289/.458 slash line with 24 homers, 55 RBI, 52 runs scored, two stolen bases and 17 doubles over 124 games between the Royals and White Sox. His recent results are encouraging, but a continually high strikeout rate makes him prone to regression.

  • Royals' Paul DeJong: Goes yard in nightcap

DeJong went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk and an additional run scored in a 9-4 win over the Guardians in Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader. DeJong didn't play in the matinee, but he was able to make an impact while starting at third base in the nightcap. The infielder has gone 11-for-32 (.344) with three homers, three doubles and six RBI over his last nine contests. For the season, he has a .238/.288/.450 slash line with 22 homers, 51 RBI, 48 runs scored, 17 doubles and two stolen bases over 120 games between the Royals and the White Sox. DeJong is not an everyday player in Kansas City, but he hasn't been limited to platoon duties since Maikel Garcia occasionally shifts over to cover second base.

  • Royals' Paul DeJong: Taking seat for first game of day

DeJong is out of the lineup for the first game of Monday's doubleheader with the Guardians. Maikel Garcia will step in at third base while DeJong heads to the bench for the opening game of the twin bill. Since being acquired from the White Sox on July 30, DeJong has slashed an impressive .280/.339/.520 over 17 games with the Royals, which has resulted in him poaching some playing time in the infield from Garcia and Michael Massey.
