Paris B asks Chris:
Should I pick up Justin Martinez for Ryan Presley?
10 Team, 9x9 categories (P: IP, K, CG, QS, W, L, SV, ERA, WHIP), Daily Lineups
I have Pressly and Kyle Finnegan. other droppable pitchers could be Pressly OR Jose Soriano, Grant Holmes, Jose Berrios, and/or Kumar Rocker?
Chris Towers: "Yeah, would much rather have Martinez than Pressly. Soriano and Berrios are also pretty easy drops, but if you're just talking about closers, Martinez is a much better pitcher than Pressly, and with Puk dealing with an elbow issue, he should get plenty of run as the lone closer."
David R aks Chris:
Chris thanks for doing this! I play in a very deep h2h category league where we get to keep 7/25 players at season's end.
Is it time to drop Garrett Mitchell for someone like Friedl? Our waivers are very thin.
Chris Towers: "Yeah, I never really got the hype around Mitchell, so I think he's a pretty easy drop. He's a good athlete, but not refined at all, and the Brewers have too many similar guys, which puts him at risk of losing time when he's cold. Would much rather have Friedl."
Bobby F asks Chris:
Not a lineup question but you guys often refer to "deep leauges / shallow leagues". How do you define a deep leage, or what is a baseline? Is a 12 team fangraphs points otttaneu deep or shallow? How many players are rostered in a "median" league? Thanks!
Chris Towers: "I would say 12 team H2H would be how I define median -- so 250-ish players total rostered, 200-ish started. Anything less than that feels very shallow, and you start to get deeper once you include anything more than 12-team Roto.
Once you have 350 or so players rostered, I think you can start to call that fairly deep."
Matthew C asks Chris:
Chris,
Thanks for doing this Q and A. Two questions. 12- team, Head-to-Head categories league in Yahoo ( R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, QS)
First, rank these batters: Austin Hays, Sal Frelick, Garrett Mitchell, and Victor Scott. Looking for steals, as I am good on power; however, not opposed to adding power to sure up those categories.
Second, I am weaker in saves than I have ever been. I have Fairbanks and Pressley currently. Would you add Calvin Faucher, Anthony Bender, or Jordan Leasure, or a lottery ticket like Luke Weaver or Orion Kerkering, and would you drop Landen Roupp or Brandon Lowe for them, or not pick up any of the above hitters?
Chris Towers: "I would rank those OF: Scott, Hays, Frelick, Mitchell. And Hays and Scott are pretty close -- if you need speed specifically, then it's easier to go with Scott, but I really like Hays and think he's going to have a very solid season in CIN."
as for saves: I think I'd rather stick with the hitters and pitchers I have, since those aren't exactly great closer options anyway. Keep looking, be aggressive with the next emergence, but I don't want to drop valuable players for the White Sox are Marlins maybe closer.
Sean S asks Chris:
Need steals in a 12 team roto w/ 3 OF, should I add Mangum or Crews? Dropping either Nootbar or Grant Holmes. Whoever would be temporary until Acuna is back anyway.
Chris Towers: "Crews for sure. He's heating up after a slow start, has cut the strikeouts in a big way lately (six straight games without one!) and has been running a ton since he got the call last year. He's a good source for steals and remains a good bet to produce overall. Mangum could get sent down with a bad week or two."
Jason N asks Chris:
Hey Chris! Is Matthew Liberatore worth a pickup in a 13 team roto league? Does he have staying power?
Chris Towers: "I'm somewhat interested in Liberatore's new slider-first approach, and it's put him on the radar for sure. But I'm not at all ready to say he's here for good. His next two outings are vs. MIL (good!) and @CIN (not good!) so I wouldn't call him a must-add here, since I wouldn't start him at cincy."
